During the Christmas season, the city is surrounded by illumination, and everyone feels happier than usual. There is something I’m looking forward to every year. It's receiving a Christmas present from my host family living in America.

I met my host family for the first time during the summer vacation when I was in my first year of high school. At my high school, students can participate in overseas training for three weeks in Spokane, Washington State. Many of the students from my high school, including me, went to Spokane to participate in homestays with different families. On weekdays, we went to a nearby school to study, and on weekends we enjoyed spending time with our host families. My host family included my host father, mother, sisters, and their dog Cookie. My host family and I have something in common: we love Disney so much! We watched Disney movies every night and often talked about Disneyland.

The most impressive weekend memory is of when we went camping. It was my first camping trip, and that one night and two days in the wilderness has become an irreplaceable memory. We enjoyed playing disc golf and making origami during the day and making a campfire at night. We roasted marshmallows until slightly gooey and tucked them between cookies with chocolate to make delicious s’mores, which I came to love.

Due to COVID-19, I haven’t been able to see my host family since my homestay. However, I frequently send and receive gifts, and we message each other via Instagram direct messages.

Among the Christmas presents I received this year were my favorite sweets, and a limited Starbucks mug available only in Washington state. When receiving gifts, I like the exciting moments such as when I take the wrapping paper off the gifts one by one. And the happiest thing is reading the letter that comes with the gifts.

When COVID-19 is over, I want to meet my host family again and speak with them more than I did when I was in high school. So now, I’m studying English diligently.

　街中イルミネーションの光に包まれ、誰もがいつもより幸せな気持ちになるクリスマス。私には毎年楽しみにしているものがある。それは、アメリカに住むホストファミリーからのクリスマスプレゼントだ。
　ホストファミリーに出会ったのは私が高校１年生の夏休み。私の通っていた高校では１年次の夏にアメリカ合衆国のワシントン州にあるスポケーンに３週間の海外研修に行くことができた。多くの同級生とともにスポケーンに降り立ち、複数の地区へグループごとに分かれてホームステイをする。平日は近隣の学校に通って勉強をし、休日はホストファミリーと一緒に過ごす時間を楽しんだ。私のホストファミリーはホストファーザー、マザー、シスターたち、そして彼らの愛犬クッキーだ。ホストファミリーと私は大のディズニー好きという共通点もあり、毎晩ディズニー映画を観て、時にはアメリカと日本のディズニーについて話を弾ませた。
　休日の思い出の中でも一番印象に残っているのは、キャンプだ。私にとっては初めてのキャンプであり、大自然の中で過ごす一泊二日はかけがえのない思い出になった。日中はディスクゴルフや折り紙を楽しみ、夜はキャンプファイヤーをした。キャンプファイヤーで焼いたマシュマロをチョコレートとクッキーに挟んで食べたスモアは格別だった。
　コロナ禍の影響もあり、ホームステイ以降はホストファミリーと一度も会えていない。しかし、頻繁にInstagramのダイレクトメッセーでやり取りをしたり、ギフトを送りあったりしている。今回届いたクリスマスプレゼントの中には、私が大好きなお菓子やワシントン限定のスターバックスのマグカップが入っていた。一つ一つ包装紙を外していく時のわくわくドキドキした瞬間がたまらなく好きだ。そして何よりも嬉しいのは手紙である。
　コロナが落ち着いたら必ずホストファミリーに会いに行きたい。その時は高校生の頃よりももっと話せるよう、いまは英語の勉強を頑張っている。
